"To be generous to the meat industry, I won't mention the pollution caused by ambulances rushing around cities to pick up heart attack and stroke victims, or the energy costs involved in their hospitalizations." (447)
Although this is a little extreme, it definitely does have some meaning to it. Eating too much meat, in particular red meat, can have a damaging effect to our bodies. When you eat too much meat, it can harden your blood vessels. As a result, this can lead to heart disease which can have very detrimental effects. As hard as it is to admit, we are sometimes eating pink slime in our meat... "The meat industry refers to it as “lean finely textured beef (LFTB),” but the public knows it as pink slime. This meat additive contains fatty bits of leftover meat that’s heated, spun to remove the fat, and then treated with ammonia gas to kill bacteria." This is something that most meat consumers know, but refuse to accept it anyway. We also an get sick from e.coli which is determined by the
number of cows that are used to make up the ground beef. Eating meat also increases the chances of getting type 2 diabetes. “Specifically, 3.5 ounces of red meat or 1.8 ounces of processed meat (e.g. a hot dog or 2 slices of bacon) daily led to a 19% and 51% increase in diabetes risk" (Dan Nadeau) This is something that should make everyone think twice about eating meat as often as we do. Along with increasing your risk of type 2 diabetes, the harmful hormones in meat can increase your chance for breast cancer. It is reported that Women who are eating more than 6 ounces of red meat per day had nearly double the risk of developing breast cancer than women who ate 3 or fewer ounces per week.Although eating meat isn't the causes of all of our sickness and problems it does create some of them.
"The senate on Wednesday twice rejected measures declaring that humans are causing climate change." (484)
It's amazing to believe that people still don't believe that climate change exists. Climate change is defined as "a change in the typical or average weather of a region or city. This could be a change in a region's average annual rainfall, for example. Or it could be a change in a city's average temperature for a given month or season."(NASA) When the weather can be 80 degrees on Monday and then 40 degrees on Tuesday, there is
obviously something wrong. Although some of climate change is natural, most of it is our fault. NASA reported that some of climate change is due to burning coal or gas. Burning these fuels is how we produce most of the energy that we use every day. This burning adds heat-trapping gases, such as carbon dioxide, into the air. When we do this, we aren't thinking about how much of a damage this has on our weather and the planet. We are the cause of climate change and it is now our job to fix it!!
